ANOTHER HEATWAVE IS EXPECTED IN BOTSWANA.

The Department of Meteorological Service wishes to advise the members of the public that another heat wave is expected to hit the country effectively from 05 to 12th March 2024. Very hot to extremely hot temperatures in the ranges of 36 to 41 Degrees Celsius are expected to be experienced during this period in the country.

These extremely hot conditions are caused by a combination of factors such as the persistent northerly air mass or wind flow that originate from low-pressure system at the surface of the atmosphere and a high-pressure system at upper levels with a strong subsiding motion which prevents the heat energy from escaping into the outer atmosphere. In addition to these uncomfortably and unbearably hot conditions, thundershowers are expected to occur over some areas of the country.

The Department, therefore, advises the members of the public to take precautionary measures to protect themselves from these adverse weather conditions. These measures may include among others:

  • Drinking more water or any hydrating fluids.
  • Avoiding prolonged stay under the sun, if at all possible stay under the shade.
  • Wearing wide-brimmed hat or umbrella.

The Department will keep monitoring this significant increase in temperatures and will update the public accordingly.
